  • Vice-President of Friedrich Löffler Institute.
    Professor for epidemiology and animal diseases at the Free University of Berlin, Germany. He is a veterinarian with expertise in infectious animal diseases, zoonoses and epidemiology. He has been working in the field of epidemiology for more than 20 years. His research interests focus on the epidemiology of infectious animal diseases (African Swine Fever etc.) and zoonoses (e.g. avian influenza, Westnile Fever, CCHF and parasitic diseases).

  • Leading the fight against COVID-19
  • As an infectious disease expert, his research focuses on zoonotic diseases in a One Health context with a particular interest in molecular mechanisms that enable zoonotic pathogens to adapt to different hosts and develop resistance to antibiotics. He has been a full professor of Microbiology and Epizootics at the Freie University Berlin before becoming president. Prof. Wieler works towards building a global, concerted multidisciplinary effort based on One Health to slow the increase in AMR and improve standards of care focusing on preventive measures. Prof. Wieler has published more than 250 scientific articles and is a co-founder of the German national research platform on zoonoses. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and various scientific advisory boards, including the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Infectious Hazards of the WHO. Since September 2020 he is chair of the International Health Regulations Review Committee (IHR-RC) convened by the Director-General of the WHO. Prof. Wieler is a veterinarian and microbiologist and received his doctorate from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. In 2021 he has been awarded as an honorary Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (Dr. med. Vet. h.c.) by the Vetsuisse-Faculty of the University of Zurich.
